When a loved one passes away, navigating the insurance claims process can feel overwhelming.
At Sun Life, our goal is to process your claim as quickly as possible. However, certain legal and administrative factors may require additional time for review.
Knowing what to expect can help you prepare the right documents and avoid unnecessary delays.
Factors Affecting Claim Processing Times
Please be aware that the following situations may require additional time for review or specific documentation:
1. Claim filed within the contestability period
The Claims team must verify that all information provided in the application or reinstatement form is complete and accurate.
2. Death due to an accident or non-natural cause
In accordance with Section 12 of the Revised Insurance Code, we must investigate the circumstances of the death and rule out any involvement by the beneficiary.
3. Beneficiary is a minor
To process a minor's share, the claimant must submit the required documentation found at: sunlife.co/GuardianshipforMinors
4. Beneficiary is legally disqualified
We cannot proceed with the claim until the claimant provides legal documentation clearing the beneficiary of any disqualifications.
5. Beneficiary is mentally incompetent
To process the share for an incompetent beneficiary, the claimant must submit the required documentation found at: sunlife.co/Guardianshipforincompetents
6. Death occurred abroad
Processing may be delayed if documents are not in English or are unfamiliar to our team. We may need to contact international partners or embassies to validate these documents.
7. Conflicting claimants
If multiple parties claim the same proceeds, we may initiate an "interpleader." This allows the court to determine the rightful beneficiary.
8. Proceeds payable to the estate
The claimant must submit the necessary estate settlement documents. Please review the requirements at: sunlife.co/EstateSettlement
9. Simultaneous deaths
We must determine the order of death between the insured and the beneficiary. If this cannot be established through documentation, we will follow Rule 131 of the Rules of Court.
10. Insured is missing
We will determine if the insured can be legally presumed dead based on the requirements for Ordinary and Extraordinary Absence under the Civil Code (Articles 390 and 391).
11. Incomplete documentation
We can only process claims once all required information and documents are received. Please refer to our checklist at: sunlife.co/fileaclaim
